# Support & FAQ

Answers to common questions, known limitations, and how to get help.

## Frequently asked questions

Is my data sent to a server?

The extension does not upload your screenshots or recordings. Capture, editing, and export run locally in your browser, with no analytics or telemetry. See the [privacy policy](https://openscreenshot.app/privacy/) for storage details and information about optional feedback.

Does it work on chrome:// and extension pages?

No. Browser settings, extension pages, and browser stores are restricted. OpenScreenShot shows an error when a page cannot be captured. Use it on regular web pages.

Why does full-page capture take a few seconds?

The extension scrolls through the page, captures it in sections, and joins them into one image. Longer pages take more time. The toolbar badge shows capture progress.

Why is my site header missing from the full-page screenshot?

Fixed headers *do* appear — they are captured on the first tile and composited once at the top. A few rare `position: sticky` setups still slip past that. If you hit one, open a [GitHub issue](https://github.com/pghqdev/OpenScreenShot/issues) with the page URL.

Can I scroll while selecting a region?

No. Region selection is viewport-only — it locks scrolling while you drag. To grab an area that extends below the fold, capture the full page and crop it in the editor.

How do I open the editor after a capture?

By default the editor opens in a new tab after every capture — you do not need to do anything. Export your annotated screenshot from the editor’s “Export” button in the top bar, or press `Ctrl+S` / `⌘S`.

If the **After capture** row in the popup is set to Clipboard or Download, no tab opens. **Reopen last** in the popup footer loads that capture into the editor whenever you want it.

Can I skip the editor and copy or save a screenshot straight away?

Yes. Set **After capture** to Clipboard or Download in the capture menu. This applies to toolbar captures, keyboard shortcuts, and the right-click menu. Direct downloads are saved as PNG.

How do I capture a menu or a hover state that closes when I click?

Set the **Delay** row in the popup to 3s, 5s, or 10s, then trigger the capture and open the menu. The toolbar badge counts down, and a region capture shows its overlay only after the delay. The right-click menu honors the same setting.

What happens to my edits if the editor tab closes?

They are saved locally as you work. The next editor tab offers the draft back, and restoring it is always a click — a stale draft never replaces a capture you meant to start fresh. A cropped image gets its own draft, so annotations never restore against the wrong picture.

Can I use the editor without capturing a new screenshot?

Yes. Drop an image file onto the editor stage, or paste one with `Ctrl+V` / `⌘V` outside a text field. The import takes the same seat a capture takes, so every tool, the beautify frame, and every export path keep working. It replaces the canvas, so the editor asks first when there are annotations to lose.

**Reopen last** in the popup footer also loads the most recent capture back into the editor.

Which file formats can I export?

Save screenshots as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from the editor. You can also copy an image to your clipboard. Tab recordings export as MP4 or WebM. All exports are processed locally and have no watermark.

Can I make a screenshot bigger, smaller, or nicer to share?

The export dialog carries a **Scale** control: 25, 50, 100, or 200 %, or an exact pixel width. It is hidden for PDF, which sizes to the page. A size past Chrome’s canvas limit is refused rather than written as an empty file.

The **Beautify** panel adds padding, rounded corners, a drop shadow, and a gradient, solid, or transparent background. The frame travels into every export, the clipboard, and PDF.

Can I change the keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. Use the **Shortcuts** link in the capture menu to view or change your shortcuts. In Chrome, you can also open `chrome://extensions/shortcuts`. If a shortcut does not work, check whether another extension uses the same keys.

Why does Chrome ask for tab capture access?

Chrome needs this permission to record a tab. It is optional and requested when you first use the recorder, not during installation. You can take screenshots without granting it.

Where are my recordings stored?

Recordings and their audio are saved in local browser storage as you record. They remain there until you delete the session. Export an MP4 or WebM file to keep a separate copy on your device. The extension does not upload recordings.

Which video format do recordings export?

MP4 (H.264 video and AAC audio) by default, which opens in most video editors and players. WebM is in the picker beside the Export button. Chrome’s `MediaRecorder` writes both formats; a browser without MP4 recording exports WebM only. MP4 frames are limited to 4096×2304, so a larger tab is scaled down to fit.

## Known limitations

- **Region selection is viewport-only** — the page locks while you drag, so a region cannot reach below the fold. Capture the full page and crop it in the editor.
- **Dynamic and infinite-scroll pages** — the capture engine measures the page height once, at the start. A page that grows while you scroll comes out at the height it had when the capture began. Images that load late can come out blank too: each tile gets a short pause to repaint, not time for a fresh fetch.
- **No settings sync** — your theme, export format, and filename template live in local storage and do not sync across devices or profiles.
